Who might want to consider using this process:
  1. If you re-use files and resources on your KATIE course sites from term to term.
  2. If you have large numbers of file resources you wish to make available on your KATIE course site and don't wish to upload them all individually or zip them all into a package and unzip them on KATIE.
  3. If you share file resources on your KATIE course site that are updated from time-to-time and you don't wish to "re-upload" the newer version to make it available on KATIE.

This process involves the following actions:
  1. (Optionally) creating a desktop shortcut to the "public_html" area of your H: drive
  2. Copying files you wish to share on KATIE to the "public_html" area of your H: drive
  3. Linking these resources to your KATIE course site.
  4. (Optionally) updating files on your public_html area of your H: drive

1. TO CREATE A DESKTOP SHORTCUT TO YOUR PUBLIC_HTML FOLDER ON YOUR H: DRIVE (PC-SPECIFIC)
  1. Go into Windows Explorer
  2. Scroll down in the left pane to your H: Drive
  3. Left-click on your H: drive
  4. Right-click on your "public_html" folder that appears.
  5. Left-click on the "copy" selection from the context menu that pops up
  6. Go to your Desktop
  7. Right-click on an open area of your Desktop
  8. Left-click on the "Paste Shortcut" selection from the context menu that pops up.
2. TO COPY FILES TO SHARE ON KATIE TO YOUR "PUBLIC_HTML" AREA ON YOUR H: DRIVE
  1. Go into Windows Explorer
  2. Select the files you wish to copy
  3. Right-click on the files
  4. Left-click on the "copy" selection in the context menu that pops up.
  5. Double-click on the "public_html" shortcut on your desktop to open its window
  6. Right-click in an open area of the shortcut's window
  7. Left-click on the "paste" selection in the context menu that pops up.  Your files should be copied into that folder.
3. TO LINK FILES FROM YOUR PUBLIC_HTML AREA OF YOUR H: DRIVE TO YOUR KATIE COURSE SITE
A. Linking entire folder contents
  1. Enter the KATIE course site into which you wish to link the files
  2. Turn editing on
  3. In the topic/weekly section into which you wish to link the file resources, left-click the "Add a resource" dropdown box.  A list of resource types will be displayed.
  4. Left-click the "Link to a file or website" selection on the dropdown list.  A new window will open allowing you to define the resource.
  5. Give the linked resource a meaningful name in the "Name" field.
  6. In the location field type one of the following (substituting your username for "USERNAME") - 1) http://academic.luther.edu/~USERNAME (mine would read: http://academic.luther.edu/~puffro01) or 2) http://admin1.luther.edu/~USERNAME (if your H: drive is on Administrative). DON'T FORGET THE TILDE (~) BEFORE YOUR USERNAME.
  7. Left-click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen.
B: Linking subfolders of your public_html area
  1. Perform the same steps from 'A' above including "/SUBFOLDER NAME" at the end (ex: http://academic.luther.edu/~puffro01/Moodle"
C: Linking individual files
  1. Perform the same steps from 'A' above including "/SUBFOLDER NAME" at the end (ex: http://academic.luther.edu/~puffro01/Moodle/sample-exam.doc")
NOTE: All address for file links are case-sensitive so capitals in names of files on your public_html folder and its subfolders must be capitalized in your reference addresses for these links described above.

4. UPDATING FILES ON YOUR PUBLIC_HTML AREA OF YOUR H: DRIVE
  1. You can access your files directly on your H: drive by double-clicking on them.  Any saved changes will be reflected to the H: drive automatically and also KATIE, if links are already in place.  This procedure can only be accomplished while on campus.

FILE SHARING STRATEGIES

  1. Subfolder structures can be easily created off from your public_html folder allowing a granular and varied method of sharing files between disparate KATIE course sites and different sections of the same KATIE course site according to your instruction needs.
  2. Do not share file resources directly from your public_html area, share from subfolders only.
  3. Place an empty file called, "index.html" in the your parent folder (public_html) to prevent students from "browsing up" from the folder you're sharing on KATIE.
